Being quite bored at work right now, I went on to Google's Usenet archive to see if I could find my earliest posts. I noticed an interesting thing.
As far as gaming groups, I posted sporadically to r.g.f.misc in 1998 about a handful of games that I was interested in. I wasn't playing at the time, having sort of left the hobby. A good portion of posts were advertisements for auctions and sales of my gaming colletion.
Then, no posts anywhere until Jan 2001, a few weeks after I got a copy of the 3e PHB. From that point on, until I left Usenet behind for ENWorld and RPG.net, there's hundreds of posts.
Ergo, an excellent example of how 3e got me back into the hobby. Pre-3e, I'm selling off all my old games and not playing. Post-3e, I spend about $90 a month buying new ones and am in three gaming groups.
3e saved my life (even if it did sacrifice my wallet
).
