You know, a thought...

In another thread, someone made the comment that those of us who don't like 3.5 were not willing to spend an average of $50 yearly on our hobby.

For me, that's so not true as to be rediculous. That's actualy the reason I hate 3.5, or at least, a signifigant part of it... it's not different enough to be a new addition, just different enough to make my old books awkward to use. I've spent, literaly, thousands on 3.0 since it was released. Thousands that, were I to upgrade to 3.5, I wouldn't be able to use as easily, but if I don't upgrade, I'll have tons of stuff coming out I want, that I can't use easily either.

So, a curious question... Answered pretty well by the poll choices, I think...

Have you read the 3.5 books yet? I too have spent thousands on the books, but in reading through 3.5, I don't see it taking that much more effort to bring the elements of 3.0 books to 3.5. Sure, there is a bit to do, but look at all the conversions people have done from 1e to 3e. Akward in places, yes, but not too daunting.

Interesting that most of the participants have "spent a lot" on 3e, regardless of the view of 3.5e!

I noticed that too. I think that definatly has to do with the fact that most of us here at ENWorld are the more dedicated players. :)

i'm indifferent (not really but i'm playing nice) to all the editions after Original D&D. but that didn't stop me from buying them. :o

Original D&D is the only true game. All the editions are just a poor imitation of the real thing.:D

I don't mind buying 3.5 because

a) I like most of the changes (at least from what I hear)
b) I didn't spend a lot on other material for 3.0 because I realized I just don't use it, even if I like the books as such
c) with 3.5 I am sure I will use it a lot, so it is a worthwhile purchase
d) my old PHB is slowly falling apart, so I need a replacement anyway;)

So many add ons for DM's to both PHB and DMG for making the world better and on what to do in situations when you are not sure of the DC's of things. I think its great. I definitely like most of the changes as well. The overpowered things being more even now means I won't always be giving haste ability to my monsters just so they can be a real threat.

I haven't even opened my MM yet because theres so much cool stuff to learn in the others.

I'm not even in a D&D game right now besides the occasional OD&D with my fiance, so I haven't bothered to pay attention to 3.5. I generally only buy books of games that I am going to be playing a game for, so until I join or decide to start a 3.5 game I will not be taking the plunge.

Besides, we are trying to buy a house, and even 90 dollars is precious in that regard.

if you pay $90 for the books you aren't trying.

i haven't found them without at least a 20% discount. most places are offering 30%. and some 40%.

Where's the "I played 3.0 since it came out, but borrowed other peoples books until I finally stuck my hand in my pocket and bought 3.5, and I like it" option? :)
