Abberations

Quickleaf

Legend
So far every description of abberations I've encountered is along the lines of "alien and inscrutable beings born of madness and nightmare in the Far Realm." Any idea how abberations will be revisioned for 4e? Any chance of a more cohesive identity and defined motives?

I ask because I'm writing up a PC race (cauldron-born) for my homebrew and am considering tying it to nightmares/far realm/aberrations.

I guess aberations being hailed from the Far Realm is already the revision. ;)

Somewhere we were told that Aboleths and Illithids are arch-enemies now.

I think aberations should defy description. What's the point of being strange if it only turns out your from Oslo?

Have you been to Oslo? It's like a risen R'yleh! Squamous and Non-Euclidean architecture abounds. The horror!

Aberrations should be strange and their motives should be inscrutable. Lots of things in D&D want to kill and eat/enslave you. Aberrations should have more unsettling motivations, like wanting to wear your skin as a serape because Mambo dog banana patch Ia. Ia. Fatgn.

Wouldn't doing this ruin what makes Aberrations great?
The "mystique" of any race depends on what info the DM reveals to the players - I'd like to see the MM give enough backstory so that the DM can portray aberrations. I mean, how can a DM portray an "inscrutable" race? Maybe it's cause I haven't read Lovecraft, but I just don't get aberrations as a fantasy race like I do fey or dragons.
