You want opinions, Knight Otu? They're both great, especially the brainstealer. I can just see a paragon brainstealer wyrm, being worshipped by a primitive clan of illithids as a god.
And they'd be about half right.

Hmm... I think that's an Oxymoron (Primitive Illithid). I doubt there have been primitive illithids ever...

Well, Krishnath, I got the idea simply because it hadn't been done before. Since the illithids once had a great civilization that has since been lost (probably in the Gith Wars), perhaps there are pockets that have since fallen into savagery. Just a thought.

I do like the idea, though it is not exactly the background I had in mind.

I envision them more as a type of dragon that would become more common/active in apocalyptic times, either as "side effects" or as the forces behind those apocalyptic times.

As for Half-Fiend Red Dragons, If it's chaotic evil you'd better not, as Chaotic Evil creatures tend to be psychotic megalomaniacs bent on the destruction of the world through the summoning of elder horrors such as Cthulhu or Shub-Niggurath. Phew, that was a long sentence...
