One thing that's always bugged me a little bit about D&D is that with the default character generation rules, you can't just sit down and design a character. A character will be heavily dependent on her ability scores, and you typically have to sit down with the DM and roll your abilities before you can work out the rest of the character.

Point buy addresses this, and I'd personally like to see it (or something similar) become the default method for generating ability scores. I'm curious what everyone else would prefer.

I voted for Other:
I use die rolls, but races that gain ability bonuses and penalties don't get them anymore, instead they roll 5d6 for the ability they receive +2 bonus to the score, or 6d6 if they get +4, and 3d6 fot abilities that get a penalty.
So Elves roll 5d6(using the 3 best results)to generate dexterity and 3d6 for constitution.

The reason for that is to prevent players from using their races' privileged abilities as dump stats when that ability doesn't convey their character builds and general min/max-ism.
