Definitely tattooed slaves, especially ones who were formerly high-born folks on the surface, as a way of further breaking their will. From nobility to, quite literally, just an object.
check out Lords of Madness by WotC. It has a lot of info on aboleths. IIRC it has something on aboleth runes. I would say an aboleth would use a large waterproof, alchemically treated sharkskin scroll as a spellbook.
A fungul growth that responds to thought growing on its body
A school of fish based abberations that attach to its body like lamprey
The skin of other aboleths it has defeated in combat
Psionic crystals
A coral like growth that emmits pheremones into the water when the aboleth prepares its spells.
A series of bracer-like cylinders that an aboleth can slip over their tentacles. Each is covered in terrible runes, and when rotated into place, they form the spell formula.
Mad followers of the aboleth slip those onto a staff and hold it horizontally to prepare their alienist spells.
I'll also chime in on the tattooed (or perhaps scarred) slaves being a great idea.
If you wanted to get wacky, what about liquid spellbooks of slime?

Now why in the world would a ... oh ... a mage (i.e. wizard). Hmm. Well, if I remember correctly the Aboleth remember EVERYTHING that their former members of the race knew. Would you technically need books then?
