Yes, the volume works for a sphere not a hemisphere.

we were fighting a troll today, and this came up.

the troll would be the center of the explosion, but he was in the middle of a forest.

the tree wouldnt count as walls, would they?

(also, on the troll subject -highjacking myself?- fire prevents him from regenerating, so if he is burning, he can take normal damage from weapons and not regenerate. check?)

Actually, in 1st edition, fire doesn't prevent regeneration. It's just that after having reduced the troll to negative HP you need to burn or corrode the body to kill it for good.

In 2nd edition the text is a bit ambiguous. You could either interpret your way or you could read it as "damage by fire or acid is not regenerated".
