About to take the D20 M plunge!

A wizard doesn't get Fireball until 5th level. The damage is almost the same and there is no standard massive damage rule in DnD. In d20 Modern, any mook can chuck a grenade and do alot of damage. That's like unlimited (unless by wealth) fireballs at first level, unless the GM takes precautions agianst it. I think the battlefield is definitely expanded in a modern genre.

The game went pretty well. We did discover that there's really no point in trying to punch someone, but grappling works fairly well. Combat was fairly lethal with the minimal amounts of healing that can be done with the Treat Injury skill. Overall we had fun, and we might try it again sometime with a Gamma World type setting.

Just a minor point as I have seen this comment many times. D20M has changed unarmed combat significantly (in a good way IMO).

Standard unarmed combat (used to be for subdual damage) is now just for trying to knock someone out without hurting them. This is very difficult unless the attacker is trained, both in the game and real life. Many people have claimed from this that this makes unarmed combat pointless. However, you should remember that a PC can still take a -4 and do normal damage, essentially beat someone to a pulp with their fists rather than go for the undamaging knockout. I have found that most PCs who are untrained in unarmed combat are best to take the -4 and just do damage or grapple.
