Abrupt end to my RttToEE Campaign

Mithriltooth

First Post
TPK sort of...
Combination of bad rolls in Combat as well as really bad saves.
Spoiler Ahead.........

The entire party (5th Level) has been turned to stone via the Cockatrices below the Moathouse.

Thorzoun Mithriltooth (Dwf Wiz5)
Fisley Griblingtine (1/2 Rog5)
Galia Be'Feyn (Elf Clr5)
Gwenect Moondark (Drow Rgr3)

The party has been having a semi-rough go at it since the beginning with bad luck and more than a few bad rolls. Are we all cursed with evil dice?

Back to the proverbial drawing board....

Well, TPK by stoning is pretty extreme. Still, it isn't entirely your bad luck. The module isn't called "Monte's Meatgrinder" for nothing.

My group almost had a TPK last week. Honestly, I think the only thing that saved us is that my LG acrobat decided that the group and the mission was more important than any one member, so we changed tactics and wrote one member off (just so happened to be my wife -- oops). We managed to be able to come back around and save everyone, but it was down to me and a neophyte player (and character) at one point.

I had to fudge a few die rolls a few weeks ago to save them from the Ghouls and Ghast around the Prison area as well.
I've been playing with some of these guys for over 15 years and we havent had a TPK since 1st edition.
They all enjoyed the game today even when things went bad. We'll be building new characters up this weekend, we already rolled for stats.

late edit*** I forgot to mention that I had planned a rescue mission in my head while the party was dropping one by one.
If one of us would have escaped, I was going to have him/her head back to Hommlet for help in the form of Elmo the Ranger and Spugnoir the Wizard along with a few Stone to Flesh scrolls. The Halfling and Priestess tried to run but were chased down.

You could always have them found by another adventuring part and turned back later. Or maybe found by the evil cultists and turned into slave labor for nearby mines or something and have them break out of the Temple instead of into it, running the module into some reverse order.

Very nice idea but kinda hard at 5th level.
I was hoping to go in order. I may still have Spugnoir, Elmo and another mount a rescue mission with my players running them.
Very cool idea though Jim.

Hmmm, you could always describe to a new party the amazingly lifelike statues decorating the ***Spoiler Deleted*** Or if you are feeling evil describe how the path is lined with newly crushed stone, some of which looks amazingly like fingers, toes, or teeth...

The Auld Gump, who preferred Village of Hommlet to the original ToEE anyway.

I think if I were running it, I'd unpetrify the characters - 75 years later, after the Temple had already won and the statues were decorating the house of a half-demon lord. :D

This group is a little small. RttToEE was written with six players in mind. Reduce the EL of the encounters by one or two, that should help.

Also, I'm very leery of drow and other ECL +2 characters. Sure, drow get snazzy magic resistance, but lower saves, hit points, and "ability lag" don't make up for it, IMHO.

Well your right at the begining of the Adventure. So, it would be very easy to continue with a new set of characters.

If you are going to run RttToEE I would strongly suggest you figure out how you are going to deal with a TPK, because there is probably a 50% chance you will have one at some point.
