Accents

Anyone use them? Some of my PCs do if they are from a foreign background, eg, Russia or Scottish. Coincidentally that's about all they can do though, as can I. Nearly anyone can do Scottish in my group, though I found out Russian - consistently - is much harder. Someone called me a Russian John Wayne :/

I'd really like to learn how to do other ones though. One of the threads here on this page (can't quite remember at this hour though) had a Mod (Henry?) speaking in a quasi-English accent. If I could replicate that for my group it'd be a hoot and a lot of fun to differentitate the NPCs.

Wow, I'm impressed. Actually getting a Scottish accent down is hard if you aren't Scottish. Specially since if you actually get into a conversation with someone who has a heavy Scottish accent it's nearly impossible to understand them. =o) Don't get me wrong, love Scottish people. Had a good friend that was Scottish but when he got going I was left wondering what the hell he was saying. =o)

Ok, ok. The one who uses accents all the time can do Scottish good, though lightly, since I can still understand him. Almost everyone else just talks normally. It's bad for him though, since even if he tries to talk in a different accent sometimes it slips back into Scottish without him realizing it until we stare at him.

*cackle*
I do that with my irish accent all the time. Cept I don't have an Irish accent living in the states all my life. But I can do an Irish accent and often slip into it while talking.

When I DM my elves get an English accent, my dwarves get German, my halflings get French (and it's a hoot!), my gnomes get Italian, and humans get a variety of accents (Scottish, Russian, Spanish, Irish, and my poor-but-working-on-it Arabian).

I love using accents. One of the advantages is that the players begin to make the associations and can easily tell which NPC is speaking.

Whenever I try to do a Scots accent I end up being very Irish. :(

Similar to my Boston accent, my mom used to say it was sooooo far that it was a Maine accent.

He he he, I always speak with an accent even when I try not to :)

My english however starts to copy the accent of the people I talk to, this is mainly a way for my sub-conciously(sp) correct my own flawed speech :)

If you let me speak english for a week or so I usually can be taken from the place I currently am at, as long as I'm not speaking with a native that is ;)

And for swedish which is my main language, I'm one of those odd people that has a composite langauge :).

I speak swedish with 4 diffrent swedish accents, from various parts of the nice little country that is called swedish, at the same time.

I can tell you people are confused when they meet me for the first time, and my friends at first thought I was just making fun of myself when it started but now I cannot switch back to my own areas accent without having to concentrate on that accent.

Henry Said:
'ere now, guv'ner, we'll be 'avin' none o' this malarkey from ye. It's a dead cert i'll be 'avin none of it, so you can jus' bee-ave!

That's a helluva accent I'd like to replicate, actually. But I dont know how to copy it - the enunciations, silent parts, slang, etc. Is there somewhere or someone where I can find out how the different accents of different parts of the world work?

Yikes, most Londoners can't speak with that much of a london accent...trust me, the best way to learn that accent would be to live here, and you wouldn't want to live in the bits of London that have that accent strongly.

They are the not-nice bits of London. :)
