Accident on I 70 at 80 mile marker (Update)

BTW, Ironwolf, your link required me to sign up for some kind of list, so I didn't get to read the link, but thanks for looking for it.

Crothian,

I am up near Sandusky (Cedar Point) for the next 28 days, then we go back down to our house in Charleston, SC and stay there until it sells, so we can then move to Elfrida, AZ. I plan to live there for the rest of my life.

Treebore, thank you for sharing this. You and your family are some awesome people that I'm not sure I'd have the courage to emulate if I had to.

I hope all goes well for your family afterwards, too.

Believe me Henry, it wasn't easy. Especially when the guy was burning and screaming. Fear of the burning truck exploding with me only several feet away from it, until I went to get more extinguishers, was hard to justify to myself too.

The apparent willingness of the others helped me stay with the truck/driver until the need for more extinguishers became apparent.

I am still spending a lot of time thinking about it.

It is cool that our kids think of us as real life heroes. My 9 year old waited on my wife and I practically hand and foot for the last couple of days because "people like you deserve it". Of course our elevated status was no where in sight today. :)

But the kids, my wife, and I seem to be doing fine about it.

Well they think of you as real life heroes because that is what you are. You handled a situation that many probably wouldn't have been able to. You prevented worst things from happening. Your kids will always think of you as real life heroes. They might not always say it or act like it, but they will.

I've driven down that highway numerous times. They were probably distracted by one of the zillions of billboards that litter that road.

Great story, btw. Sounds like you did your good deed on that day!

Yes, the people were awesome. Obviously racial issues didn't matter, considering two who were helping were middle eastern, and several were black, and several were hispanic, and all of the accident victims were caucasion. All everyone cared about was doing what it took to save lives and make them as comfortable as possible. Made me feel good to be part of such an impromptu group of people. Made me realize how overblown the issues of race and nationality have become. We are all just simple people who want to live safely and well.

I witnessed the same thing happening last night. On my way home from class I came across an accident scene at a busy intersection. It obviously had happened only moments before. Several cars stopped, people were helping the people in the cars (no fire in this one, so not quite as scary), a couple of people started directing traffic around the accident to keep it clear for emergency vehicles and one person, who I'm assuming is an EMT, grabbed a kit from the back of his car and ran over. The police were on the scene about one minute later. Its great to know that in a crisis, people are willing to help. Thanks Treebore.
