Action Point System

Wikid Klown

First Post
I've read a few threads here, and I've come across the action point system a few times, mostly praising it. I'm relatively new to gaming (2 years, one session as a PC), and I haven't been able to find the rules on it. I want to know what it is, how it works, and any oppinions you may have. I'm starting a new campaign soon, and I'd like to incorporate it into the campaign, or at least run a trial adventure with some of my players to see how they like it. Thanks in advance, sorry if this has been asked over and over.

The action point rules are printed in three places that I know of, each a little different. D20 Modern had them first. They were D&Dized in Arcana Unearthed. Eberron tweaks them a bit. The only version of the rules I have playes is in Eberron. The characters get a set number of action points per level. Reach level the action points renew, with any left over points NOT carrying over. A character can spend an action point to add a 1d6 roll to any d20 roll. They are also used to activate some special power feats.

I think that they work great. Players tend to really like them.

Spycraft, Mutants & Masterminds, and Star Wars d20 also use action points (hero points in M&M or force points in SW).

Ok, so they get a set amout that doesn't carry over. Is it level/class/race dependant? Do they have to state it before the roll, or can you do it after a sucky roll? I can't find the rules anywhere for it (why I'm posting here), and I have no job (I'm 16), and have access to none of the mentioned books (incase any of you were thinking "why doesn't he just buy the book and find out?")

Mostly depends on the system...

In Eberron, it's level dependent. All 1st-level characters get 5, all 2nd- and 3rd-level get 6, etc.

You can spend them after you roll, but before you know the results of your roll. So if you're pretty sure you need a 14 or better to hit, and roll a 12, you can spend an action point to improve your roll. Of course, if you really need an 18 to hit, chances are you'll still miss, and if you only need a 12 to hit, you've just wasted an action point.

Get the Modern SRD from the wizards website. It has a section on AP's and how they work in modern, and it's free.

In modern, you get them level by level, and they accumulate. If you had 8, use 3, and level up to another level, you get the 5 you had banked plus the new level.

In modern, the number per level depends on what class you take. 5+ 1/2 char level for base, 6+1/2 char level for advanced classes, 7 + 1/2 char level for prestige classes.

there's also a feat in d20 future that allows you to move up from d6's to d8's.

Also, depending on your level (i know it's in the MSRD somewhere) you get to roll 2 d6's and choose the better one, and eventuall 3 d6's, etc depending on how high a level you are.
