AD&D Collection

As for Players Options.... consider reconsidering.... it is my impression that the bad taste left by many about the 2nd edition was mainly because of these books.

This is especially true when creating new priest classes using the Player's Option: Spell & Magic. Their system enables to create the worst of munchkin classes. So, don't allow it as a player's toolkit, only a DM's toolkit.

I know where you are coming from. IMHO the 'older' 2nd edition and first edition stuff is better. I myself am using ebay to rebuild my OD&D and 1st edition collection... Somehow flipping through the original S1, Tomb of Horrors brings back good memories, and personally I think that the PHB with the charging warrior on it was the very best version of the DnD rules 'evar'. It was not as 'CRPG/miniature wargame' like as the new rules of 3.x are (again, IMO, as I experience them).

For those with such a mindset, it would probably be a good idea to get a look at the Castles & Crusades game (either on Trollordgames website, or on the C&C thread which must be around) if you don't already know about it. Really.

If you want to go for playability, consider buying the 'first printing' of the 2nd edition, the PHB with the charger, the DMG with the red dragon and the 'white' monstrous manual. IMHO this is the best set of all from the point of view of playability...
Just wondering... AFAIK there is no difference in the text between the "old" and "new" 2nd ed core books (other than errata fixing, I guess). So why would the old version be better than the black version from the point of view of playability?

I mean, I can see why one would dislike the Player's Option books, but the core books?

Sado,

So, you want to play AD&D.

I would suggest, at a minimum, a PHB, a DM Screen, & a module or three.

You could also get by with a PHB & a DMG. This will give you the tables from the DM screen & the resources for creating your own adventures, including monster stats & a random dungeon generator.

The MM, FF, & MM2 are useful luxury items. Once you've got all that, the next logical acquisition would be a DDG.

Any hardbacks beyond that are gravy &/or of questionable utility.

Hope that helps.

Why second edition? Why not go for the gold and get yourself the 1st edition books? Nothing else comes close to the style, even if the rules are similar.

Be sure that after you re-acquire the AD&D core books, you pick up copies of Planescape and Dark Sun to make your purchase worthwhile.

Makes no sense to have the rules and not the two best things to come along for 2nd edition after all... ;)

Nostalgia, it's what I started on.

BTW, I also thought the 2nd ed revised (black cover) was pretty much the same as the original 2nd ed. Is that not correct?

And there seems to be some division on the Player's Option books. Good or not?
