Skills make up an important part of any role playing game. A character’s skills are what make him or her versatile and unique.

In 4E, skills are broken down into a small number of broad categories, with each able to be used in a number of creative ways. The latest incarnation of the game has also introduced us to the skill challenge, a dramatic encounter where the situation is resolved through a series of skill checks instead of the combat system.

By Skill Alone includes notes on designing your own skill challenges, presents a collection of new skill challenges suitable for parties of all levels from the heroic to the epic tier, gives new uses for every skill found in the 4E player's book, and also includes three new Rituals whose results are based on skill usage.

I bought this the other day and I have to say, at first glance, this looks like a very cool pdf. I'm all about new Skill Challenges and new uses for Skills in general. Great job!

I can now forgive you for not releasing Against the Air Pirates! ;)

Yeah, it was one of the first erratas issued for 4th Ed.

Skill Challenges are failed after accumulating (3) three failures, across the board, regardless of the complexity...

DC's were scaled down as well from what was originally published in the Dungeon Masters Guide...

The errata came out in July or August of 2008...

Blunt, direct answer: I can't answer for the writer, but personally -- I wasn't aware of the errata, and I liked how these played out in playtest.

These are all new challenges, and I think they work well in and of themselves. They may not follow the new, altered official format -- but I suspect that gamers who are concerned with officiality aren't likely to be purchasing third-party 4E product in the first place.

Its easy enough to fix the failed Skill Challenge issue - just keep in mind that 3 failed rolls is an automatic failure regardless of complexity.

However, it would be nice if the author went back and corrected the DCs for each skill challenge (for those of us who use the updated DCs).

That's gotta be a record, too - 4.5e apparently came out one month after the release of 4e! ;) B-) (I'm kidding!)
