Adamantine: What does it look like?

Wouldn't adamanTINE things be things made from adamanTITE?

Not according to the SRD.

This nonmagical [dagger, axe, breastplate] is made out of adamantine.

Adamantine is used as a noun, not an adjective.

I seem to remember something about adamanTITE hanging on tightly to the ceiling, though... :)

"Adamant" is an old name for diamond... Diamonds are generally clear, though often shaded with various colors.

In 1e, Adamantine was an orange-gold color.

As previously pointed out, however, when Gygax wrote the Gord the Rogue novels, he made it sky blue.

Also in 1e, the Drow weapons were black (as also previously pointed out).

3.xe hasn't addressed the question!

So, either there are various colors, it changes periodically, or it is whichever color the GM wants it to be!

P'raps it is clear, and can have impurities added so that it takes on whatever color you want?

Adamantine:
In dragon #36 its "a blue cube dotted with a myriad of bright little specks that looked like imprisoned stars"

There is also an alloy called adamanite in dragon #17, that's "55% black, 25% dark blue, 20% dark green".

Some more quotes :) .. from "Volo's guide to all things magical"

Adamant: This is the pure metal form of the hard, jet-black ferromagnetic ore known as adamantite, from which the famous alloy adamantine is made.

...

Adamantine is black, but has a clear green sheen in candlelight-a sheen that sharpens to purple-white under the light given off by most magical radiances and by will-o'-wisps.

... and a lot more about it's properties, etc, etc.
