Adamantium Golem

Pheonix

First Post
My first attempt at making a new monster. Rather dull, but what the hey... What do you think?

Golem, Adamantium
Large Construct
Hit Dice: 26d10 (143 hps)
Initiative: -1 (-1 Dex)
Speed: 20’ (cannot run)
AC: 44 (-1 Dex, +36 Natural, -1 Size)
Attacks: 2 Slams +40
Damage: Slam 2d12+30
Face\Reach: 5’x5’/10’
Special Attacks: Fists of Might
Special Qualities: Construct, Damage Reduction 50/+5, Magic
Immunity
Saves: Fort +8, Ref +7, Will +8
Abilities: Str 45, Dex 9, Con -, Int -, Wis 11, Cha 1
Climate/Terrain: Any Land or Underground
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: 16
Treasure: Special
Alignment: Always Neutral

These incredible constructs resemble gargantuan humanoid statues made of purplish-silver metal. They weigh easily 3,000 pounds.

Construct: Immune to mind-influencing effects, poison, disease, and similar effects. Not subject to critical hits, subdual damage, ability damage, energy drain, or death from massive damage.
Fists of Might: The golem’s slam attacks both count as +5 magic weapons for purposes of attack rolls, damage rolls, and damage reduction.
Magic Immunity (Ex): An adamantium golem is immune to all spells, spell-like abilities, and supernatural effects, except as follows. An electricity effect slows it (as the slow spell) for three rounds, with no saving throw. A fire effect breaks any slow effect on the golem and cures one point of damage for every three points of damage it would otherwise deal. The golem roles no saving throws against fire effects.

Construction:
The golem’s body is made from 3,000 pounds of pure adamantium. The golem costs 200,000 gp to create in addition to the cost of the adamantium. Assembling the body requires a successful Craft [Armorsmithing] or Craft [Weaponsmithing] check (DC 27).
The creator must be a 20th-level spellcaster and able to cast arcane spells. Completing the ritual drains 5,000 XP from the creator and requires the geas/quest, magic weapon, polymorph any object, and wish spells and the Craft Magical Arms and Armor and Craft Wondrous Items feats.
Note that 3,000 pounds of adamantium costs about 3,000,000 gp.

Gish is righ. You need to show the average hit points for the golem. This would be 26 × 5.5 (round down) = 143 hp

Initiative: -1 (-1 Dex)
Speed: 20’ (cannot run)
AC: 44 (-1 Dex, +36 Natural, -1 Size)
Attacks: 2 Slams +36

Your melee bonus is off by 1. The -1 that applies to AC also applies to attacks, and you didnt factor in the +5 from its Fists of Might special attack, so this should be:

Attacks: 2 slams +40

Damage: Slam 2d12+17

According to Dragon Mag #276 in the article that details monster making, the most a Large construct could do with a slam attack is 2d8. Also, since the Slam is its only natural attack, its Strength bonus is multiplied by 1.5. You must also add in the +5 for its Fists of Might. Your damage here should be:

Damage: 2d8+30

Face\Reach: 5’x5’/10’
Special Attacks: Fists of Might
Special Qualities: Construct, Damage Reduction 50/+5, Magic
Immunity
Saves: Fort +8, Ref +8, Will +8

You didnt subtract 1 from the Ref save from the Dex of 9. These should be:

Saves: Fort +8, Ref +7, Will +8

Abilities: Str 45, Dex 9, Con -, Int -, Wis 11, Cha 1
Climate/Terrain: Any Land or Underground
Organization: Solitary
Challenge Rating: 19
Treasure: Special
Alignment: Always Neutral

Other than these things Ive noted here, looks good! :)

One question though. You list Fists of Might as a special attack, but if you refer to the DMG under special attacks it is nothed that if a creature has Damage Reduction (i.e. 50/+5) then the creature can hit anything with a DR of up to /+5.

So my question is.....do you really need Fists of Might listed?

I added the average hit point listing, and fixed the reflex save, attack bonus, CR, and damage.

Your melee bonus is off by 1. The -1 that applies to AC also applies to attacks, and you didnt factor in the +5 from its Fists of Might special attack, so this should be:

Attacks: 2 slams +40

Thanks for pointing out the size penalty-fixed it. But the total bonus is actually +35:

(26 HD x 3/4) + (+5 from Fists of Might) + (+12 Str x 1.5) - (1 Size) = +35

Also, as to the slam damage, I fixed the damage bonus, but the damage dice should be okay-the Iron Golem, which this is based off of, deals 2d10 base damage in a slam attack, and is a Large Construct.

Yes, actually. The bonus applies to DR penetration, damage, and accuracy, not just damage reduction.

Thanks for the help, everybody!

(26 HD x 3/4) + (+5 from Fists of Might) + (+12 Str) - (1 Size) = +35

But the ability score bonus for a Strength of 45 is +17 , not +12. The +12 bonus would come from a Strength of 35, not 45.

And about the Slam damage, the rules in Dragon #276 arent etched in stone... make the damage dice whatever you think they should be, but keep in mind that d12s for damage is usually reserved for Trample attacks. I wouls suggest the 2d8 damage, but you can really do whatever you want. :)

Very nice, a little on the expensive side, but very nice. I would consider giving it some form of area attack also, say for example an aura of cold or some such :D

By the way, anyone know of a good spell to use in a breathweapon for a golem? preferebly a cone or line formed spell area.
