Adding new DR

How about this..?

If I naturally have DR5/Cold Iron or Good, and I pick up a thingey that grants DR5/Good, does my DR change from Cold Iron or Good to Cold Iron AND Good, or does nothing happen and I'm wasting my time with the item?

Well first they would need to get past your DR/good, then move on to check if they get past your DR/cold iron or good. If they had a good weapon, they would bypass both damage reductions, and you wouldn't be protected from good-aligned weapons. If they had a cold iron weapon, it would be reduced by the DR/good and would bypass the DR/cold iron or good.

DR from different sources will not stack unless it specifically says it does - the DMG is pretty clear on this. Only the best single DR against the weapon used in that situation will apply.

For instance, a monster has DR 10/silver, 5/magic and good, and 2/- from various sources. It's rather confusing, but it comes out to something like this:

Silver and magic and good: DR 2/- applies.
Silver, but not both magic and good: DR 5/magic and good applies.
Not Silver (magic/good irrelevant): DR 10/silver applies.

"If I naturally have DR5/Cold Iron or Good, and I pick up a thingey that grants DR5/Good, does my DR change from Cold Iron or Good to Cold Iron AND Good, or does nothing happen and I'm wasting my time with the item?"

Nope, you end up with DR5/Good. The fact that Cold Iron could get through your Cold Iron OR Good DR doesn't matter anymore. They need a Good weapon.

Applying the best DR = DR 5/good in this case.

I would say no. Armor DR like one provided by adamantine full plate, for example, would not stack with "natural" DR provided by barbarian levels or dwarven defender levels.

I'm pretty sure I read something along "adamantine armor DR stacks with high level barbarian (and similar) DR".

Can't locate it. Anybody got a clue ?

Nope, it's definitely not anywhere. I'd allow it, though, since I think it was probably intended that all x/- damage reductions stack. Otherwise, one of the nicest abilities of several classes is completely and easily duplicated by adamantine armor.

Personally, I would rule that DR only stacks when it specifically states that it does so. In all other instances they would basically overlap- so in the original case, it's pretty much the same as if it were DR 5/magic and silver. On the other hand, adamantine armor and barbarian DR would overlap.
