Adv2 Item sets

Is it just me (and it would be perfectly fine if it was) or does anyone else get the distinct feeling that the items in the items set section of the new Adventurer's vault are on average quite a bit more powerful than your standard items?

With the exception of the Rhythm Blade, I found their powers to be on par with or worse than other items of their level. Did not get much of a "this item is stronger than others" vibe. There were a few items I thought were cool, but nothing that made me want to pull out a black marker. Same can't be said about a few items from AV that make certain item slots unavailable to half the characters in the game (such as Iron Armbands).

I'm with Mengu.

There were a couple neat items, but in order to get the (usually underwhelming) set benefits, you have to pack a few lame items in. I skimmed most of them looking for something really compelling, but nothing really impressed me that much.

No "Iron Armbands" level items (which I'm glad about since they are one of those must-haves that take the place of other more interesting items). In fact, there weren't many set items that even struck me as competitive with the other items already out there...

Yeah, my impression was that none of the sets was compelling enough that as a player I would want to collect it vs just assembling optimum items in the same slots. Even counting the set powers you can come out better with just a collection of unrelated items. Its possible a couple of the sets may be exceptions, but even then I don't think they surpass what you could do normally.

I can still see sets being kind of fun to collect and given that a whole party will generally collect a variety of items useful to different characters its possible one character might choose to put the set together if they have the items. Story reasons aside though I don't see too many players going gung ho to build a set except just for amusement.

Ugh. Ever since WoW came out, games from MMOs to text MUDs have made up their own version of "set items". In fact I know a mud right now that does something similar. creates sets that have some good items, but mostly mundane ones to balance it out. I just wish that people would be innovative enough to do something different. sheep flocks..

If you think that wow was the first game to come out with the idea of item sets, then you need to learn a lot about roleplaying and fantasy games.

I appreciate everybody's input. And at the end of the day, I like that I was wrong because that means I'm not out of line for asking for these items for my character.

well, duh, no. where do you think blizzard got their idea from? But they popularized it, and now its a massive cliche.

diablo didnt have set items, per say. Yes, it had items [Of the (animal name here)], but having multiple pieces together didnt synergize to give you bonuses you didnt have before, like having +5 to hit for having helm, neck, torso, and two rings of the eagle. They had their own bonuses, but never would become more than that for having a full set.
