Rinaldo put his guard up with his rapier (ready action: if he attack someone, I counter attack). "Who are you?" he say to the shape.

As I called in my last post, I was in ready action, and if he was about to attack, I would had counter attack (or partial charge if he was attacking someone else). So if I had the time to ready that action, Rinaldo should counter charge (or attack if the bugbear is within 5 foot, as it is impossible to charge at that distance).

My next action, if I am near him (I have 5 foot to move for closing him or I am next to him), I will try to feint him (improved feint, so move action) and then attack him (+2d6 sneak if I feint him) with his rapier (+3 att, 1d6 damage, crit 18/x2)

sorry for the confusion, the bugbear did win intiative and everything I put in the last post would have been in the one where you spotted it, but I didn't know where the light was cast.

Rinaldo fakes to the left of the bugbear, sensing as he does so that the bluff was almost embarrassingly bad for one of his skills, but luckily he is not exactly facing his intelectual equal. The beast follows the directon of his feint and Rinaldo lunges at his exposed flank, but fails to connect.

Persephone casts her spell, but the bugbear seems to throw it off with a shake of his shaggy head. He swings at Rinaldo with a wide blow, but the merchant dances aside easily.

OOC: I'm taking Zoe doesn't notice any of this?

Zoe sees the light persephone carries moving through the fields, then suddenly be obscured. she can see shapes moving and hears some sounds but doesn't have a clear veiw of the fight.

As he seems easy to confuse, he will stay in the way of the Bugbear to persephone, to be sure he is the target, and will continue to feint on him before trying to attack.

Rinaldo executes a feint that he feels a lot better about and is even more pleased to score a strong hit on the creature's right side. It howls in pain, but stays up. Persephone's second spell seems to take better and it pauses in confusion, failing to return the blow. Rinaldo's next blow seems to graze off the beast's tough hide.

Zoe has readied her horse and as persephone stands, the light makes the situation clear to the paladin. Behind the battle, she thinks she also sees a large shape moving towards the group.

Persephone

"Rinaldo, what is that thing? Zoe, we are attacked!" She will shout.

Persephone will whip out her crossbow and load it, preparing to shoot.

Persephone gets a shot off at the beast, and feathers it nicely in the ribs (critical). It stands staggered for a moment, then tries to move towards Seph, swigning wildly at her, only to collapse at her side. As the beast ceases its noise, both rinaldo and persephone now hear a lumbering sound aproach them. Turning, they can see a creature on all fours, as big as a horse, but looking canine in nature, coming towards them over the feilds. It is moving slowly, perhaps even limping, though its hard to tell just yet. As it lifts its head to bay, you see a flash of silvery metal around its throat.
