D&D 5E Adventurer's League for Shorter Adventures?

Ath'kethin

Elder Thing
So, a few of us (including me) have been harping on for some time about how we would like shorter adventures to play, instead of just the 1-15 story arc books. I noticed a headline on the D&D website this evening that nobody else seems to have mentioned: "D&D Adventurers League Content Open to All!"

Within the article was the following statement:

"We also listened to the D&D fans who wanted more bite-sized adventures to pick up and play with their group in a pinch. All of the adventures created for the D&D Adventurers League going forward will be available to all fans of D&D."

I've never played in the Adventurer's League; so you think that these adventures will fill the gap we were complaining about? I have downloaded and read through the two that were provided as part of Dragon+, and they didn't exactly blow me away. They seem too closely tied to the main storylines to my taste (which makes sense, it's just not my cup of tea).

Does serving up the AL stuff to fill the requests for shorter adventures feel to anybody else like following the letter of the request but not the spirit?

It is certainly a nice start to offer more than just the larger adventure paths.

I like the ones I've read. I just started running "Harried in Hillsfar" and it is a breath of fresh air compared to the larger campaign books. Even though it is only 5 episodes (and says it can run between 5-10 hours), I'm building it into a mini-campaign that my last me for 10 sessions or so (we usually play for 2 hours per session). It is certainly easier to manage and run than PoTA or other larger books (I'm also currently running a PotA campaign but we haven't played in a while due to scheduling conflicts).

I like how "Harried in Hillsfar" takes place in an area of the Forgotten Realms that isn't on the Sword Coast directly. And because it is a prelude to the OotA campaign, it can be used without the adventure path if that's what you want. It is also really easy to change locations too and drop this and the others into homebrew.

In many ways the AL mods are part of an adventure path. Characters in it are only going to be in those, maybe some side treks into the published adventures, but really the Season is kind of a loosely coupled adventure path. Like an adventure garden or buffet or menu. All of a theme and they go together but you can pick and choose and even do some, many, most, out of order.

I've run a few. I had little trouble reskinning some as sidetreks set in Baldur's Gate while my Tyranny of Dragons campaign was in that city. I've also run a few for my homebrew campaign. Some of them are a little too closely tied in with the storyline and overarching plot of the season, but many of them can be divorced from the FR fluff and run as standalone adventures easily enough.
