D&D 5E Adventuring in a maze

I can't talk about this particular place, a town with multiple locations you want to go to. But I know the last time I ran a maze, I instead asked the PCs how they were going to make their way through it, then ran something akin to a skill challenge but also took into consideration spells and other resources used. Based on how well that went determined how long it would take, and how many hazards (encounters, traps, etc) the ran across on they way.

Of course, I often do dungeons following the "Five Room Dungeon" concept so my table is used to narrating halls and empty rooms and such and not getting hung up that every choice of "left or straight" needs to be made when it's not a meaningful choice. (Meaningful - has a consequence, and the players have enough information to make a choice.)
