advice on printing PDFs

Can someone offer some tips on printing color PDFs with a B&W printer? In particular, some color maps i'm trying to print come out very dark all over (and it uses loads of toner).

Sure.

Set the PDF size to 100%, press the "print screen" button, open up your favorite photo program, paste your image, make the image black & white, adjust the brightness to something brighter. Save the image, create a Word-document, insert your map there, adjust the size so it fits inside an A4 and print it.

Then only print the text from PDFs. Works like a charm.

How do you paste images from Adobe to a photo program? I've never been able to figure out how to 'select' images from Adobe, only text.

Acrobat is not an editable format.

SO the work around as stated above is to do a screen capture using 'print screen'. To get this image into the photo program you simply go to edit and paste. The capture is sitting in the computer's clip board.
