African-based Modules ?

Silver Moon

Adventurer
I have two playing characters who come from an African-based continent on our world and am toying with the idea of running a short module this summer in one of their homelands. I was curious is anybody else has done something similar and what modules already exist for that type of setting. I own most back issues of Dungeon Magazine but off the top of my head don't remember a specific module set there. I also own a copy of "Nyambe: Ancestral Vault" which will be a very valuable resource for this adventure (thanks again Crothian)!.

what part of Africa?

I3 Pharoah plus I4 and I5 (combined as I3-5 supermodule) work or X3, X4, X5, (x3-5 combined) X10 for the Desert parts...

Jungle in I use one PC, lightly forested and plains if I use the other. Thank you for the X-series suggestion. I checked what I own and X8 "Drums of Fire Mountain" might work well.

Still wondering if there are any modules in Dungeon Magazine also set in African-based lands.

There are several African-style modules in old Dungeon magazines. Unfortunately, they really are OLD Dungeon magazines - dating back to the late days of 1E. Updating them for 3E shouldn't be too much problem, but actually finding the back issues might be problematic. Paizo's website (paizo.com) would be a good start.

Your main man here is David Howery, who penned a series of related modules for Dungeon. Good stuff, too. Several unique monsters drawing from African legend, plus some nice environmental set-pieces. Try the following issues: #15 (Elephant's Graveyard), #22 (The Leopard Men), and #56 (The Land of Men with Tails). I note that David also did modules in #30 (Ghazal) and #32 (Ghost Dance), but I can't recall if they were set in African-style settings. I suspect not, so the first three modules are probably your best bet.

...and props for "Drums on Fire Mountain" - one of my favorite X-series modules. If you're going Old School (and why not?), you also might consider adapting the classic "I1 - Dwellers of the Forbidden City". Wonderful open-ended "lost jungle city" with enough encounters and factions for a creative DM to craft his/her own style of adventure.

There is also a Nyambe adventure by Atlas. Unfortuantly, it didn't sell well and was probably one of the last things for Nyambe that came out, along with Ancestoral Vaults.

A second voice for those old Howery Dungeon adventures - really well conceived and executed, but simple-enough to add-on where necessary. The bad guys NPC party in 'The Elephant's Graveyard' nearly did for my group, many years back, and produced one of those wonderful, tense sessions for which we all play.

My memory is fuzzy, but did Chris Perkins write some African-flavoured stuff in 1st ed Dungeon as well?
