Agile Athlete/Atheletic Master synergy?

Wednesday Boy

The Nerd WhoFell to Earth
When it comes to Athletic checks do the Athletic Master paragon path feature and the Agile Athlete feat synergize at all (for maybe the best of four rolls) or are they functionally redundant?

=========
Athletics Master: Roll 2 dice whenever you make an Athletics check. Use the result you prefer.

Agile Athlete: When you make an Acrobatics check or an Athletics check, roll twice and use the higher result.
=========

Thanks for the help!!

As written they would stack since one says to roll 2 dices and the other states to roll twice.

If they both stated "roll 2 dice" or "roll twice" then they would not stack.

This may not be what they intended, but it is what they wrote.

You're probably right but (without trying to come across as argumentative...) one ability says you "roll 2 dice" and the other says "roll twice".

I wasn't sure if it could mean you make an Athletics check, rolling two dice and using the result you prefer (as per Athletics Master) then you make a second roll (as per Agile Althlete) rolling two dice and using the result you prefer (again as per Athletics Master). And overall using the higher result (as per Agile Athlete).

But I'm probably reading too much into it.

Potentially they can stack because of the wording, and the fact that "a roll" means "a roll of one or more dice that are summed together to arrive at a result"

When you make an athletics check, you roll 2 dice (from athletics master), then pick the result you prefer. After that, you then roll a second time (from agile athlete), again 2 dice (from athletics master), pick which result you prefer and then use the higher of your two results.

To be honest, the wording from athletics master is pretty bad - it's almost contestable as "roll 2d20 for your athletics check", and is only really saved by the "use the result you prefer" tacked on. Someone could potentially read the two sentences separately and end up rolling 2d20, summing them, then choosing a number that they like the sound of.

That said - do you really need to roll 4 dice and pick the best one? Rolling 2 dice and choosing the best gives you an average of 15 on the roll, rolling 4 isn't actually helping you that much more.

The Agile Athlete feat is the ideal mechanic for the dextrous gymnast feel that I wanted for the character and the Cat Burglar PP is perfect for the character's background. I have to weigh whether sticking with the PP that fits best and paying the feat prerequisites (and the feat itself) is worth what I'll get out of it. You're right, 4 rolls is probably unnecessary overkill but it makes the build more viable to me than if the two features are redundant.
