In that case, what's the difference between a LG cleric and a paladin?

Hong "rant coming on" Ooi

Lay on Hands? Divine Grace? Immune to Fear and Disease? Special Mounts? Limited Spell list? In-ability to multi-class? Code of Ethics? d10HP vs d8HP?

Context. Learn it, use it, love it.

The Book of Hallowed Might (by Cook) has some good stuff on paladins, including rules for neutral and chaotic good paladins.

If you're interested in Scarred Lands at all, Sword & Sorcery will be putting out a Player's Guide to Monks and Paladins eventually. Its good, I wrote the paladin sections :)

Hong... the difference is Maces vs Swords ! :)

More seriously thou... the difference between a LG Cleric and a Paladin is indeed very narrow... I would say a Paladin leads by example and is a symbol of his religion. Clerics are representatives of their religion too... but are much more focused to divine magic and not combat necessarily.

Okay, what's the difference between a cleric with the War domain, buffed up with divine power, divine favour, endurance, bull's strength, shield of faith, magic vestment and greater magic weapon, and a paladin?

Clerics are warrior priests, basically. They may often get shunted into the party medic role, but their class abilities and spell lists are geared towards kicking butt for great justice. Which isn't a bad thing (since the game is designed around the whole buttkicking theme), but it does mean that defining niches for fighters, clerics and paladins becomes messy. D&D's conflating of the secular champion and religious warrior roles, by giving the paladin lots of divine powers, doesn't help much.
