Airwalkrr's Maure Castle IC Chapter 1: The Great Hall

Longren

"Mystic circles are your specialty." Longren says, nodding to the rest of the group. Reaching behind him he grabs hold of the greataxe tethered there and pulls the knot on the thong. The weapon slips free and he rests it over his shoulder. "This is what I do." He says with a smirk.

Glancing down the long hallway he turns and takes a few steps into the northern way. "Why'd this be cut out here? Doesn't make much sense." He says as he looks around the alcove.

[sblock]How far down have we traveled? He'll know automatically per the belt of the dwarvenkind.

Also, untrained Search check for the alcove. Belt of Dwarvenkind grants him stonecunning, so if that's applicable add +2 to his role.[/sblock]

Longren senses that you are approximately 60 feet underground at this point.

After investigating the circle, he realizes the stonework of the star and the ground is very old, ancient even. The designs and technique used are of a very antiquated sort. It is likely that there is not even a single elf or dwarf alive today who was alive when this star was carved, which means the surrounding structure may be older still.

"It is a little strange, now that you mention it," Silhouette notes with a little pout. "Let me get a closer look."

She approached from behind Longren and leaned over him to get her look. When the warrior shot her a sour look she chuckled and gave him some space as she knelt down near the circle elsewhere to examine it for hints of its purpose and use...

(Search and Knowledge: Arcane, I guess...let me know if a different skill is needed)

GM: FYI Longren is a human. He just has a belt of dwarvenkind.

BTW, is [MENTION=42885]s@squ@tch[/MENTION] aware the IC thread is up?
Silhouette examines the star and doesn't find any secret compartments, traps or other things to be worried about. As she thinks about the star, she does recall a bit of arcane lore...[sblock=Silhouette]The star has the markings of ancient Suloise magic upon it. It seems the star functions as some sort of planar transport device, but its magic is dormant for now. Your best guess is that it is activated when a specific object is inserted into the shallow depressions at the points.[/sblock]

"Well now," Sil hmms as she examines the markings and the depressions. "It's definitely old. But I don't see anything threatening about it. No...reactive abjurations or runes that trigger on sight. It's not a trap, that's certain. Looks more like a conveyance. I think each of these little divots represents a different place...or maybe a different plane. Regardless, it's inert now, and we haven't the means to activate it so we should press on."

While his companion inspects the star, Brisarion considers the religious aspects of the thing.

OOC: Well, looks like I got my first Natural 1 out of the way early on!

Longren

"Conveyances. Right." Longren echoes, trying to sound like he understands. "Sounds like we should just...go around it, then." With a nod Longren starts down the south hallway.

"That's what I said," Silhouette says with a chuckle. She shrugs and follows the warrior, glancing back to see if the others were coming too.

While his companion inspects the star, Brisarion considers the religious aspects of the thing.
There does not appear to be any religious significance of the star. The faithful of Celestian have been known to use stars as symbols for various purposes, but this doesn't seem to be related to Celestianites.

Your group proceeds down the hallway to the the right, which eventually opens up to a larger room about thirty feet wide and twenty feet across. At the far end of the room you see a pair of massive doors, each 4 feet wide and made of thick wood bounded by iron. The doors and floor in front of them are scraped and scratched, as if someone had unsuccessfully tried to force them open. It seems that they open inward, but even this is debatable.

"Well now," Silhouette muses, "This is a pretty imposing set of doors. If only we had some kind of...I don't know...piece of metal made to open things, a kind of key, if you will. Say, who's got that key again?"
