Hmm, you might want to check out Neil Gaiman's latest short story collection, Fragile Things. The very first story, "A Study in Emerald" is basically Sherlock Holmes vs Cthulhu. Lotsa fun, and yoinkable ideas. I particularly like the little newspaper ads used as 'chapter headers' - my favorite:
