Anybody check out the ALIEN directors cut?

Yes, and its the best version yet. The famous "cocoon" sequence has been inserted into the film, which was a bit of a concern for me because Ridley originally cut it because of the perfect pacing of the last act without it.

However its addition was pretty ingenious, he trimmed a little bit of Ripley initiating the self-destruct sequence just prior and the cocoon sequence itself is actually shorter than what you see on the DVD, so timewise it actually plays out the same.

There are a couple of other minor additions here and there, but unless you're extremely familiar with the original you won't even notice them. The only "bad" special effect in the entire film is when the alien hangs outside of the airlock, because its so obviously a man in a suit, but instead of replacing it with a ridiculous and destracting CGI monster, Ridley just cut a few seconds off that particular shot so you don't cringe as much.

Of the recent crop of enhanced "special editions", including Star Wars, E.T., and Superman: The Movie, "Alien: The Director's Cut" is the first one that's actually better than the original.

Sweet. I was hoping they'd put the cocoon scene back in. It makes the aliens a lot more scary than just plain old 'bugs' who have a 'hive' and are as busy as bees.

When I first saw the cocoon pictures, I was fascinated. It also brings up a lot more possibilities in the series.

Let's hope that AVP has some space marines though and not just more stupid colonist's daughters that need to be rescued from their virginity...

It's not playing anywhere near me.
I had planned on going last night, but when I search for a theater within an hours drive, nothing. The closest theater that has it is in Washington DC. Maybe I'll see it in a week or 2.
