All good things come to an end...

I swear I recently saw this on the t.v. show Supernatural! I think it's something that should be limited. I would hate to have one member of a party gain all the benefits for an extended period of time.

A while back, I statted up Falkor, the luck dragon from the Neverending Story. I think that luck dragons would have some sort of immunity to the effects of the Hare's Foot. They wouldn't benefit from it, but they would be hurt by it either. That might be another way to get rid of the object.

The problem with this artifact is that a person who loses the foot is under a time constraint. Even though 5% seems low, it is a cumulative effect which will result in a PC death in 20 days (or less) unless the hare's foot can be recovered. That works fine for a TV program, but for many campaigns that simply is too short a time period. I think the chance of death should be 5% but once a week for PCs -- near death experiences can be fun to make up for the DM. I can think of few and if you can't all you need to do is listen to Tom Lehrer's "The Irish Ballad" and plunder it for ideas.

Very nice idea, implementation needs some help though. 5% chance to die in a freak accident -- totally sucks for a PC. There's just nothing fun about it.

How about instead, you are targeted disproportionately by undead and evil outsiders. Like, you tend to get attacked more (your party encounters more), and you are the target of more attacks (they aim for you in particular).

Conversely, the possessor is never targeted if there are other targets available. If he attacks a specific foe, it is free to attack him; otherwise, he is ignored. (Spells should count as attacks -- use the rules for invisibility breakage to disambiguate maybe?)

The -10 penalties are much to harsh, IMHO. -1 or -2 would be plenty terrible.

I'd love to see an item like this in a party, before they knew the curse -- "hey, lend me that rabbit's foot, I need to make a skill check!" :]

Cheers, -- N

It's hardly more powerful than most other minor artifacts, not to even mention the major ones.

I mean, you can gain over 100,000 xp with a deck of many things, plus 1d4 wishes, etc etc.

It's meant to make you ridiculously lucky and then horribly unlucky. I don't know why you wouldn't have fun with that, but for an artifact I hardly think it is a big deal, especially as other items will kill you immediately instead of just eventually.
Well, first, Deck of Many Things grants 10,000 xp.

And +10 to all checks and AC is far better than any of the benefits granted by the Deck of Many Things (yes, much better even than 4 wishes!).

It's up to you of course, but I would not like it if my DM dropped this item in the campaign.
