How does LA, according to your understanding, work?

Well, in this instance it's a racial ability that, in and of itself, isn't especially potent. It'd be useful, but certainly not mind blowingly powerful.

What you're talking about is a combination of how some races/classes can be powerful, but that doesn't make the race itself especially crazy powerful, does it?

Essentially the class gains access to a 0 level spell a set number of times per day, and it can convert that spell into equivalent level spells of a set number of schools. Mind you again, this is a zero level spell.

I mean, it's not as crazy as entirely negating the full on maximized breath weapon of an epic level force dragon or anything. =)

And then being defenseless against said Force Dragon.....

Oh, so what you're talking about is that it only works if you take levels in Wizard, Sorcerer, or some other arcane spell casting class?

You could argue at +2.

No, it doesn't. Silent Image is a first level spell.

Make the Silent Image thing a supernatural ability, make sure it can only mimic 0 level spells; explain what "+1 to illusion spells" means; and we're set at LA +0.

However, as stated above it casts it as a 0 level spell.

Essentially it's a race so adept with shadow based illusion magic (sort of like a potentially sinister form of gnome...) that even youngsters learn to master this most basic of shadow illusion spells... as well as how to convert it into other shapes and forms.

Silent image is 1st lvl.
By saying its a 0 lvl spell all you do is that you reduce it's save by 1. Taking into acount the "unless interacted with" rule, the save with such a spell is not even so important.
When spells are used as SLAs, the spell never goes bellow the spell's actual level.. (all i'm saying is that iti looks weird...and i'm not sure if it was intentional or you just thought silent image was a 0 lvl spell)

As far as the:

Can convert that spell into a shadow equivalent evocation/conjuration spell of the spell's level. i.e. Could convert that silent image into a shadow version of acid splash or ray of frost as per shadowcraft mage's ability to convert.

its really powerful....

Its like a free wiz/sor multiclass.
Imagine a 17 level fighter who is also able to mimic 9th lvl spells...

also..the:

Can cast Silent Image as a 0 level spell as many times per day as a Sorceror of her character level

does not make sence with a 0 lvl spell.. a sorcerer always has six 0 lvl spells per day...from lvl 1 to level 20...

Jimlock,

Silent Image IS a first level spell. However, this race treats it as a 0 level spell.

A fighter could not cast 9th level spells because he would have no spell slots with which to convert shadow image into of the appropriate level. The caster must take heighten spell to heighten the shadow image from 0 to level whichever in order to convert it to a spell of an equivalent level. A wizard who took arcane disciple for the luck domain could theoretically convert that shadow image into a shadow version of miracle.

Call it force of habit, regardless... the race would have access to six castings of the 'shadow image' as a 0 level spell each day, as per a sorcerer.
