Alter Self

for Humanoid, is there anything better than Troglodyte? (Grants the +6 nat'l armor) Maybe Merman for swim speed?

More thoughts?

Troglodyte and merfolk are probably the two best in the monster manual for utility. The spell can also be used for disguise, though, and that's very situational. If you have other monster books to choose from, your options open up in interesting ways. I don't have MMIII in front of me, but there were some interesting variations in Lizardfolk I'd want to look at.

I've used alter self to turn into a merfolk for an underwater adventure, and that's probably the best use of a second level spell I've ever seen. Very helpfull.

Of course, if the caster's type is other than humanoid, the situation changes greatly. At some point I'll have to look around and figure out what a warforged could do with alter self...

I don't believe anything in MM1 has wings and qualifies for a humanoid caster of alter self. Those elves with wings in the forgotten realms probably qualify, bu I don't generally play in the forgotten realms...

There's the Skulk in MMII, I think, that grants a +20 bonus to Hide checks or something massive like that.

Curious:

1) Are there any flying humanoids in MMI that would give you wings?

2) Can you get darkvision through alter self?

I think Skulk are in the Fiend Folio, Dark Ones are good at hiding also.

Slight thread hijack

Does anyone know if the Avariel (spelling?) are actually humanoids?

The only reference I have for those flying elves is Races of Faerun, which doesn't seem to give a type.

Also, does anyone know if alter self gives you the troglodyte stench special attack? It is an extraordinary ability, but does it come under the physical qualities exception?

If you were to get it (such as from polymorph, if alter self doesn't give it), is that ability controllable by the player or is it an involuntary reflex?
