I recently read Lawrence Watt-Evan's OBSIDIAN CHRONICLES series (http://www.watt-evans.com), and I thought the whole way dragons were done was way cool. I made some rules for using Watt-Evan's dragons instead of the traditional DnD dragons.
First, there is only one type of dragon. Use the Red Dragon's stats in the MM for them.
The colors: Wyrmling dragons are bright red, Very young - Juvenile are gold-colored, Young adult - Very old are green, and Ancient and older dragons are black.
Dragons are not even remotely reptillian, they're completely magical.
Rather than eating food, dragons eat the souls of their victims.
All dragons are CE and will kill anything they can on a whim.
Dragons don't breathe fire themselves, they breathe acid that ignites after exiting the dragon.
Sometimes this acid does not ignite; the acid it still highly corrosive and lethal.
When mixed with human blood, the acid's lethal capabilities are removed. When this blood-acid concoction is consumed, the comsumer becomes a dragonheart.
Dragonhearts:
Live exactly 1000 years after they drink the potion.
Age in appearence reletive to how much time they had to live in their mortal life
Are immune to disease
Heal quickly from nonlethal wounds (5 hp/rest instead of 1)
Become sterile; they cannot sire or give birth to children.
Get +2 CHA
During the 1000 years of life a dragonheart has after drinking the potion, a new dragon is slowly growing in their heart; After that century is up, the dragon bursts forth gorily, comsuming the human incubator's soul.
If a dragonheart is killed before his 1000 years is up, the dragon dies with him.
Dragons are usually carefull to leave one or two survivors from each town they destroy; they usually spray these people with non-igniting acid, letting it burn partially through them. This gets blood in the acid, and it often finds its way to the mouth of the victim.
I think it might be neat to center a long adventure, or maybe even a campaign, around these new rules. What do you think?
