Alternate Epic Rules

Bloodstone Mage

First Post
Has anyone else used an alternate epic level rules system or advancement? Like, instead of having epic levels, having a template added to the character? Or an epic prestige class to add to the character? I'm just curious on what other ideas people have.

Thanks in advance. :)

Cheers!

Well, I don't want to go into detail, but an alternate (and far simpler) epic rules system is one of the projects I'll be pitching to a few companies in the near future. I'll let you know how it works out.

(But for the record, it still adds class levels. It just does so differently than the ELH...)

Let's just say I use houes rules that make fighters and monks less favored as the first 20 levels, but also make epic characters a tad more powerful (but aren't they meant to be?)

My players are far from epic as of yet (9th level) but I have no intention of using the Epic Handbook stuff. I don't like the way they slow down progression after 20th level. I intend to stick to the old Level+2=*2 power.

One thing I was thinking is having Epic BAB (or some such) so that when a character reaches a certain level he starts over a +1 but this +1 is better than his old +20. Kinda like Heroquest's Mastery Level or Burning Wheel's Shades. I haven't found any decent way of doing it mechanically yet.

Oh, yeah. And I'll have 10th level spells. :)

We too will be doing a book dealing with character levels 20+. We're capping core classes at 20 levels, then you can take PrCs or levels in another core class after you hit 20th level.

Resurrecting an old thread here...

So that was 3 years ago. I'm curious, Mouseferatu what became of your epic rules project?

Alas, the same thing that has happened to multiple dozens of ideas and projects I've really wanted to work on over the years: Nothing. :(

The simple truth of working in this industry is that you rarely get paid to work on your own ideas, but rather to work on someone else's.

I've got a lot of backburner projects I really need to find a home for some day. This, my Shadow Branch campaign setting, my Mythic Greece setting/sourcebook, even the Eyros project that started here on ENWorld and that I should have finished many months ago :o --all these, and more, are things that I'd still love to work on. (And in the case of Eyros, I still owe it to the contributors to do so.) I just haven't had the opportunity, and can't afford to really look for said opportunity, since it would mean a break from paid work.

Man, I really enjoyed your work on Hamunaptra and have been reading bits and pieces about the Eyros project, and would have loved to see your epic rules. Hopefully somebody decides to publish them - I have a hunch they're quite good. I count myself lucky that my first rpg project was something I was really passionate about.
