Alternate Magic System (Instead of spells per day.)

You could use the formula... spell point cost = spell level + casting level

So, all cantrips would be 1 spell point (casting them at higher level never brings a benefit).

A magic missile would cost at least 2 SPs (to cast it 1st level caster level), and could be as much as 10 SPs (to cast it at the maximum of 9th level, though you could use higher caster levels to increase the range).

A fireball would have a minimum cost of 8 SPs, would cost 13 SPs for maximum damage, and 23 SPs for maximum range.

Depending on how many SPs a wizard gets per level, this could work.

Another idea is to deal the wizard an amount of subdual damage based on spell level and caster level instead of using spell points. He would cast slightly fewer spells in a single combat, but since subdual heals by the hour, he could probably cast more per day.
