Alternate Summon Monster lists?

there area few in Unearthed Arcana. they seem alright.
I made my own summon monster list, involving mostly abberations and the like, for my tiefling summoner. I should warn you right now - CR is not a good guideline for building your lists. You can't just look at the list and say "hey, this creature is a CR 3 monster, so I'll just replace it with a different CR 3 monster" - it doesn't work. I wound up summoning a Grell, figuring it'd be fine since it's CR was within the range of the spell, and that creature wound up literally EATING through the opposition. I think it single-handedly took out about five of the eight or so 3rd level rogues we were up against.
We wound up just re-writing the list so that most of the creatures on my summoning list were just normal monsters with the pseudonatural template. That worked a lot better.
In fact, that's probably what I'd suggest for your summoning lists - templates. It's pretty much the route the PHB takes anyways, with fiendish and celestial creatures being big on there. really, just take a few animals, apply your template of choice, and build your list around that. You can add a few monsters that feel right, but try to just add creatures that have few special attacks and special abilities (you know, the ones that are focused around melee attacks).
