How Do You Adjudicate the Rules?

I think there is little doubt that EVERYONE who tries to stick with the rules uses them in an "interpretive" way, even if they don't realize it. You may THINK there is some magical thing called RAW, but it's all about how YOU interpret the words and decide what they mean.

Yeah, that's something I also wondered about... see my above post for an example, where I see the difference between RAW and interpretive (rules, that you basically 'house rule' to something that is not really said in the words, but that seems closer to what you think the words are meant to say; so it's not really a house rule to do that a little different, but rather an interpretation of the RAW; the difference between letter and spirit of a rule).

I voted 'Interpretive + House'.

We try to stay RAW for the vast majority of the situations and to stay with House Rules As Written (HRAW?). But there have been some situations where we looked at the house rules, said some grandmother unfriendly terms to described how we felt about them in that particular case and then ruled our own way on them.

Perhaps another interesting question is:

"How often do you modify rules "on the fly" during a gaming session?"

For my groups the answer is: Never. I've always found having the rules (Core, wide RAW, or house rules) written down beforehand reduces problems.

That doesn't prove or disprove the existence of "true" RAW, but I gather there is no benefit to be had in such a debate, so I'll leave it at that. ;)
