Amazing Engine

I just picked up a bundle of books from this game (System guide, For faerie queen and country, Magitech and Bughunters). My question: Does anybody still play this? Did anybody ever play this? Has anybody got any hints to share?

I am a big fan of the For Faerie, Queen & Country setting -- for those of you who aren't familiar with it, it was a Victorian supernatural setting, with an emphasis on the fey folk. There were thaumaturgical societies, royal magicians, Holmesian detectives -- it was notably short on physical violence and long on atmosphere. IIRC, it used a grammar-based magic system, where you constructed spells like sentences, where the subject, verb, and object determined the subject, scale, and effect of the spell. Good stuff!

Bughunters was somewhat popular, at least by niche game standards, but otherwise I don't remember hearing much about people playing. Amazing Engine itself wasn't a bad system, but there wasn't much to recommend it over other alternatives, either. Some of the settings were pretty cool, and that's about the nicest thing I can say about the line.

Has anybody got any hints to share?

I personally wouldn't be inclined to use the AE rules, but the setting books are worth mining for ideas.

I'm a fan of Magetech because it comes really close what I would like to have as a fantasy world.

The sourcebooks are good. But I would just port it to 3e if I was going to run players through it.

But for those who prefer percentile-based game mechanics, Amazing Engine has a good one.

I haven't played Amazing Engine in years, but it was a good system, and designed to be cusomized. My favorites were For Faerie, Queen, and Country, and Tabloid.

We never used the rules for continuing characters across multiple genres though.

I've got the Amazing Engine System and the Magitech world book. It certainly is interesting. It might even be fun to play as a variant for Urban Arcana. I picked up the books at one LGS before it went out of business. The history of the setting is interesting enough, and the fact that Venus is now terraformed and called Hanahpu provides more material for exploration. Overall, it is certainly an interesting campaign concept.

Never played the system, but I liked many of the settings. My favorites were Bughunters, semi-revived in d20 Future but altered enough to not be as good as the original, and Metamorphosis Alpha to Omega, an update of the MA game from the 70s - it included a pretty cool map/schematic of a huge starship, complete with photos of a nifty model someone built of the ship (with flashlights for engines, which I always got a kick out of). The system never really appealed to me, and I never knew anyone who played it.

Does anyone know of any websites that support this stuff? :heh:

I went looking a few years ago, without luck. I had a bunch of stuff for it on my Amiga, but that has gone to the great operating sustem in the sky.
