Amber - Zelazny

The actual story I have sent to the DM is pretty much teh force of will (psyche) to fight through the chaotic shifts of the Logrus. I'll have to wait and see what he says.

Also need Endurance

I'd say that in addition to Psyche, Endurance would be important for traversing tha Logrus with no SS. The fact that your trying keep everything going on within the mind and trying to keep the body uneffected would take alot of energy.

As a side note, I'm sorry you don't like the Shape Shifting ability... I loved it. I played a couple of PCs that had only that power, and then Adv SS, and I loved them. But it really isn't for all players. One of my old fellow players thought it was useless too.

Hey, could someone post the full list of Amber books? I've read the five books beginning with Nine Princes, but that's it. Are the rest good?

.

The second five books are a series in their own right, which focus on Corwin's son. They're good, but in a different sort of way from the first series. They're much more sci fi (Merlin, the protagonist, is a computer engineer by trade). They also introduce a great deal more cosmology, some really interesting characters (like Frakir the intelligent, invisible garrote wire), and generally shake up the setting a fair bit. I'd personally say the first quintet is better, but the second quintet is still a much nicer read than alot of fiction out there. Its definitely worth the time.

You can pick up an anthology these days with all ten books under a single cover for around 20 or 25 dollars. Its well worth it.

There are also a selection of five (possibly more) short stories that follow on a few loose ends at the end of Merlin's Chronicles. Since they were published in various magazines (including the very hard to find Amberzine) collecting them all is quite an accomplishment. I have read (but do not own) all of them, and I would say that they are also very good, and again have a different flavor than the other two series. It's a shame that Zelazny died when he did; it looked like he still had a good deal of Amber stuff in him.

I'm not sure I like the idea of anyone else writing Amber material; I'll have to see what this new book has to offer.

I also would agree that the first series was better than the second. The second series has a great storyline, but the fifth book ends the series so horribly, it literally takes the 5 or six story lines, leaves them open and says The End.

I wish I could read the 5 short stories.

I will go order the prequil book on Amazon, I really liked the world. I would rather see books after the second series. SPOILERS FOLLOWING

You have many powers of Chaos trying to manipulate Merlin, The threat of Ghostwheel, Corwin's Pattern, Corwin's whereabouts. The relationship between Amber and Chaos, we all know a common bloodline is not enough to quell yearnings of power. These are just off the top of my head and I have not read the series in 10 years.

I keep hoping that someone will gather all the Zelazny short stories about Amber into one anthology. Maybe, with the new book out that idea will get kicked around by the people that run the Amber stuff. Well, I can wish.;)

The novels in order:

Nine Princes in Amber
The Guns of Avalon
Sign of the Unicorn
The Hand of Oberon
The Courts of Chaos

Trumps of Doom
Blood of Amber
Sign of Chaos
Knight of Shadows
Prince of Chaos

The short stories:

The Salesman's Tale
The Shroudling and the Guisel
Coming to a Cord
Blue Horse, Dancing Mountains
Hall of Mirrors

Cheers!

This thread forced me into spending 23$ at lunch today. The collected anthology of the 10 books is call "The Great Big Book of Amber." I had read the first 4 about 18+ years ago.
Heres a question, is there a web site or something that does a good job of explaining the premise- something I could use to put together setting info? As I recall the diceless game did nothing in the way of a setting. I will probably never use it but if I did I'm geussing most of my players have no idea what it would be based on. It gets rather complex really, the players are sort of like gods and the shadows are sort of like alternate matrerial planes and anybody can travel between the planes but it might kill you and you can create your own world etc etc.
I think you get my point as to the complexities of explaining it to someone who is not in the know.
