Well, this goes back maybe ten years ago or so to 2nd edition. There was an adventure in Dungeon magazine in which the players come across a town that, for all appearances, was abandoned. The buildings were actually a type of mimic called house hunters, gigantic beasts designed to lure the group in and kill them. Enter the most unfortunate character I've ever seen play the game. One of my players had a ranger who had died 4 times in the same campaign (thank goodness for ressurection). Once in a fall from dragon back (I don't know if that actually counts, he was wearing a ring of regeneration at the time an woke up while another player was looting his corpse *awkward*), once in a fight with a rakshasa who cut off his legs and left him and a delayed balst fireball in a warehouse full of smoke powder (it was a Red Steel game), and TWICE in this adventure. First, he and the thief tried to sneak up to the village to see what was going on while the others stayed back. The ranger decided to pry open one of the windows on the inn... the largest of the buildings. Well, a few seconds later our thief was running back to the group with whatever bits of him were left for ressurection. After bringing back the ranger the group went back for vengence. They each chose their targets and attacked. Each party member attacked one of the buildings, and after quite a fight, finished them off. The ranger, however, went after the smallest of them, an outhouse. After putting up a good fight the poor ranger, weakened from his earlier encounter, lost the battle, and wasn't found until much later... long after he was dead. To this day, a decade or more later, whenever we bump into the player at the FLGS or somewhere we remind him of the time he was killed by a s**thouse.
