Actually, I don't think you need spell haste to keep up with the fighters. Ever heard of Metamagic Feats? Quicken and Maximize spell are your best friends.
As well as such things as Summoning Spells, hold/charm/domination-type effects, etc.
It's very easy to stay even with the fighters when you're a mage. You just have to know what spell to use in what situation.
Is the party being charged by a horde of half-dragon grimlocks? Whip out that good ol' Wall of Force, or a Prismatic Wall, If you got one. Being shot at by a couple thousand archers who will likely kill the party in less than a round? Wind wall is your pal. And there's a good ol' combo of spells that will put you on par with the fighters in no time. It's called Mordenkaden's Sword and Tenser's Transformation. Top that off with Mage Armor, and BOOM! Time to kill.
Spellcasters have a spell for every imaginable situation. USE EM!
(Sorcerers have scrolls.)
