An Elegant Solution to the Hitpoint Question...

As others have said, I think the most elegant approach to hit points is to stop trying to mathematically quantify them.

How much of that abstraction is physical, or luck, or stamina, or whatever ingredient, is up to you as a player to decide. If the DM says "the goblin hit you with a sword for 3 damage," you can either imagine your character with a bleeding gash in his shoulder, or somewhat winded from a clanging blow to the breastplate. But as long as you are still subtracting 3 from a number on your character sheet, the game mechanics don't care.

My favorite recipe for hit points is (Hit Dice + Con mod) x level. It's not the only recipe...and it's probably not even the best recipe...but it is the one we will always use at my table.
