Pathfinder 1E An Evil Campaign For Pathfinder

I have read through the first installment myself, and Shane's 5-star review is spot on. The only divergence I have in Mr. O'Conner's review is that "railroading" is actually logically defensible in an Evil campaign and didn't detract from my opinion of it. Afterall, the "patron" of the player characters isn't going to accomplish his goals if he doesn't keep his nine groups of wild minions on a very short leash. Plus it fits with Asmodeus in the whole lawful evil realm of things.

I am a big fan of this product guys. Not that my opinion amounts to much more than a hill of beans :-)

Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you liked the product. More is on the way!

If you bought "Way of the Wicked: Knot of Thorns" -- your opinion counts, my friend. At least it does to me.

And by the way, if the first adventure is a "railroad" (I prefer the term event-driven, myself), then the second is not.

The second adventure is a dungeon-management sandbox. You get your own dungeon and for a period of time you must defend it against all invaders. And by invaders, I mean adventurers. They will try to thwart your attempt to call forth darkness. Of course, that means they have to die.

This looks like an excellent book that I will never have the opportunity to use. Everyone I game with has the potential and desire to play in an evil campaign, but they would almost assuredly kill each other every session regardless of alignment or plot.

Seriously. In the first session, one player would no doubt play a monk, kill everyone else and use their spines as improvised, not to mention messy, weapons as he escapes from the prison single-handed. Or tries too, and dies horribly.

This is very much a module for seasoned, and more importantly mature, players.

Chronologist,

We are certainly cognizant of the potential difficulties of playing bad guys and the adventure does take step to prevent exactly what you're talking about.

First, for the GM, there is an essay full of advice and constant commentary about how to handle your little band of would be villains.

For the players, we explicitly spell this out during character creation. I quote myself on page 90 of the book. This is part of the material you should give to players before the campaign's start.
This is not the campaign for chaotic loners or free spirited vagabonds. Those campaigns exist in abundance and if they are what you are looking for, perhaps you are in the wrong place. This is a campaign about joining an evil organization with a wicked agenda. Eventually, you may even come to control that evil organization.

“Way of the Wicked” is a chance to play an unusual sort of character. You will play a burgeoning dark lord -- someone who will rise from imprisonment and destitution
to become one of the greatest villains of this age. At first, you will be a minion in service to a sinister plot. But eventually, you will be a minion no longer. You, if you can survive, will become the master.

Regardless, thanks for checking out our product.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the concept of the book. I would run it in a heartbeat, I would play it in an instant. I just don't happen to have any mature gamers in my area who would be able to play any kind of evil alignment other than Chaotic Evil. Even if they were lawful, they would try to usurp control of the organization at level 3, not 16. And they would die. Horribly. And complain that my NPCs are too strong, and that they're not having any fun.

Incidentally, I haven't run a game with these people in about 3 months.

I'm actually looking for a new group at the moment because of this, and if I find one I can assure you that I will be buying and playing this campaign.

I understand. This reminds me how grateful I should be for the great group of guys and gals I game with every week.

I hope you someday find a great gaming group as well.
