An interesting art comparison

Alas, that article doesn't have very much of the Planescape art - where most of the demons ended up for most of 2e. Of course, some of that art was pretty bad (glabrezu), but I've always had a fondness for his vrocks. And succubi....

And what are you talking about, Shade? If anything, the nalfeshnee's really let himself go. Poor guy. Must be all the stress eating. Judging the souls of the damned can really put you on edge.

(Incidentally, I've always thought that putting the nalfeshnee in the same picture as the succubus in the 3.5 MM was some form of cruel practical joke on Lockwood's part. "You want nipples? I'll give you nipples!" and then evil laughter.)

Demiurge out.

I suppose the addition of color helped to mask them a bit. He looks alot like Fat Bastard from the Austin Powers films nowadays.

He's a demon. What's to judge? "With cheese and a bun or Atkins-style?"
That's what nalfeshnee do. Decide which petitioners get to move up in the Chaotic Evil world. "Manes, dretch, manes, manes, dretch, lunch, manes... oh, this is all too much pressure!" Then he grabs a babau intern and swallows it whole.

Demiurge out.

I greatly dislike the new maraliths. They are more accurate from a biological standpoint (being reptilian and all) but they are outsiders. They have no reason to have a biology.

Well they have no reason to have an attractive human body either; what makes humans so darned special that demons have to be in that form? They always are things like "human with bat wings. Human with snake head. Human with horns." Never "Gnome with bat wings" or "Female hobgoblin with 6 arms and snake tail..."

How about this: Humans were created by the gods. The demons were created by the gods. Demons look like humans because the gods were short on time and/or thought the human form was a really cool idea. (Coincidentally, my campaign includes a creature native to Tarterus who is a vampiric gnome with bat wings.)

Humans are one of many races. Why aren't there any dwarvish mariliths? This goes for celestials too (though there are a fair number of elfy celestials).

Who the heck picked out the artwork?

Because in all of the 2e pictures, there's barely anything from the Planescape Monstrous Compendiums. It's a shame that they seem to have taken the MC:Outer Planes Appendix and just used that and that alone for virtually all of the 2e images. It's hardly representative.

And they completely missed the 2e Orcus image (from Dead Gods).

DiTerlizzi's Succubus was indeed nice. But I'll remain partial to his Erinyes.

Overall, while some don't care for his style, I felt that Tony D was very very good, but with some very notable exceptions (ie the Glabrezu). His work in the Planes of Conflict box set was some of the best for 2e though IMO.
