Ancient weapon sources

Looking for a reliable source on ancient weapons (things in use between about 100 bc to 100 ad). Can anyone recommend a goos book (or even a website).

Are you looking for European weapons/armour of that time period (late Roman republic/early empire) or far eastern ones? Osprey Publishing are good, if fairly basic, although they'll tell you as much about how armies are organised as about equipment. If you're looking for illustrations and descriptions there are some excellent (and very expensive) museum catalogues. The Palladium books on weapons and armour are rather good, if not always entierly reliable, but cover a longer period. Most do cover a much longer period, and while the Osprey books usually are quite specific they also tend to be about one army or type of soldier, so aren't comprehensive.

Looking for arms and armor that would be relevant in a Roman empire campaign (set between the reign of augustus to vespasian). So not just roman weapons but weapons of anyone tge romans would have regular dealings with.

If you're looking for (VERY) pretty pictures and some descriptions then I'd heartily suggest the Opsrey books.

Books that cover fairly wide subjects often have pictures of both sides.

While I haven't looked at that particular book, Roman Battle Tactics looks like it might be just about perfect for you.

But your best bet is probably to browse the books in a large book store or on the net (amazon.com tends to have reasonable subsets on line).

I like the Osprey books, too, for just about any period. Otherwise, grab a copy of this from your library (or through their interlibrary loan dept) and see if it gives enough detail -

GURPS Low-Tech is pretty good. It's a game book (GURPS -obviously,) but the level of detail and the quality of information is the same as what you would expect from any other SJG product. Much like the modern counterpart (High-Tech,) there is a lot of detail concerning not only weapons, but equipment of the time as well. There are even a few pdf companion pieces which add extra detail to the information found inside the book.

Relevant Ospreys:
The Roman Army from Caesar to Trajan
Roman Legionary, 58BC-AD69
Rome's Enemies, a five book series (1 Celts, 2 Germans/Dacians, 3 Parthians/Sassanids, 4 Spanish, 5 Desert Frontier)

If you can find it, Armies and Enemies of Imperial Rome (Wargames Research Group, 1981) would also be good.
