Re: Writers

Couldn't resist joining this thread. I am a published novelist just breaking into rpg writing. My first two books were put out in the small press last year. RIVERWATCH, my debut, was optioned to become a feature film and has since been acquired by Pocket Books for mass market publication in 2003.

Pocket also just bought my new dark fantasy series, the Templar Chronicles. Book one, HERETIC, comes out in 2004, with two others to follow.

I've got a couple of freelance contracts with d20 publishers at the moment, so you should see some of my stuff late this year or early next.

For those of you who desire to make it as novelists, just keep sending stuff out. I'd be happy to answer any questions about the road I took if you are interested.

I do indeed have some questions, thanks for asking. :)

First off, which small press company did you deal with? I'm always looking for new markets.

Second, do you, by any chance, have the name of an agent (perhaps even yours, if you've got one) that you might suggest? I'm not asking for special treatment or for you to name drop, since you don't know my stuff. I'm just looking for agents who handle fantasy and are currently accepting submissions for new clients.

Heh. Honestly, if I'd had any success with my novels to date, I wonder if I'd have gotten into RPG writing. Well, yeah, I probably still would have; I enjoy doing it. But damn, I want to be a novelist. :)

Oh, please don't hesitate to respond by e-mail, if you prefer.

Delay and odds

Now, though my sample may be a bit biased, I have yet to even meet someone who won the lottery or who was struck by lightning even once.

One of my housemates has been struck by lightning twice in his life and he entered. Wonder what that makes his odds :)

Actually we even discussed whether that would influence his luck b/c he had a good setting idea. Hell, the 3 ideas sent in by our household were all pretty good as far as we and our friends were concerned.

One thing I noticed in the release is that those who don't make the ten (or however many) 10 pagers will not be being contacted.

Not really surprising I know - I was very surprised when I heard that everyone would be contacted about their entry - but worth mentioning, I think.

:)

...I doubt very much that they will increase the number of 10-pagers they will consider - 10 for the second round is about right regardless of the number of first round entries they receive.

I'm of the mind that the submission round limits were set up to be flexible both downwards and upwards. WotC has already shown that the time limit set in the guidelines documentwas not set in stone, and I have the feeling that if they decide to open the 2nd round up to 15, 20, or even 25 ten page documents, they will have already set the precedent that the timetable - and therefore other specifics - can be changed as needed.

I for one can't image them not asking for a 10 pager from every inital submission that they think might go the distance...

The thing that suprised me about WotC's announcement was the number of submissions they recieved. I thought they'd get well over 10,000, closer to 100,000. For the amount of money they're offering you would think that everyone with a homebrew campaign world would have sent in a submission, most of them several submissions. I guess there are just fewer active DMs than I thought...

Except for the fact that they only announced it online, cutting out everyone who doesn't regularly check news sites right there. I know that no one else in the circle of local gamers that I play in had heard of it before I told them. Also, they only allowed about two weeks, which fell right at the end of school, when a good portion of players are concentrating more on finishing up their term projects and studying for finals than stuff like this.

Those whose submissions have been selected for further development into ten-page proposals will be notified by that time.

Now we want to take the necessary time to make sure we give all proposals the best consideration possible.

If more than ten ten-pagers will yield the best fantasy setting, they'll ask for more. If fewer are needed there will be fewer requested.

WotC appears committed to doing this right. Good job, guys.

Not to pop any bubbles... but...

Just a little friendly reminder that if selected, you'd first be writing a 10 page proposal, and if THAT is selected, you'd be writing the setting bilbe for the world. Not an actual novel, but a world book for other writers to use to write novels and game material and such.

Though, I have to admit I'm unclear what that "preferential" deal is about. Sure, they might choose the winner to write stuff, but that's not gaurenteed. (Am I way off base there?)

Who would know the setting better than it's creator? Granted, they could pull bits and pieces from the final three and and create something new.
