You should try this cool system I just discovered: "D and D." I don't remember what all those "Ds" stand for, something about donkeys I think. Anyway, it must be good because there have been 35 versions of it!

In no particular order of preference:

Hero System 5th ed (and if you want Fantasy, also get Fantasy Hero)

Rolemaster (Big monetary investment like D&D as much of the material is broken into seperate books)

Warhammer FRPG One of the few complete game systems, monsters, magic items, advanced classes (PrCs), spells, maps, setting and other goodies.

BESM: The original game system is simple yet fun. The Tri-Stat book I've heard eliminates a lot of the anime flavor for pure mechanical goodness.
 


A little off the beaten track of RPGs but Immortal and Noir both have been good reads and are fun to play. And of course there is that greeat Buffy RPG ;)
 


In Nomine, definitely. Beautiful game, bad rulebook, (It so needs to be made more clear and concise), but still, Beautiful Game.
