And the Iron Man is ... Robert Downey, Jr.?

I think this is a great choice. Downey has experience with alcholohism and undue media attention. He matches the alter-ego role well.

Like I said, he could pull it off ... I think.

What I don't care for is casting Famke Janssen as Stark's love interest. It's like we're recycling actors from within Marvel Comic films franchise. Jon Favreau should look harder for someone original and fresh.

As a huge Iron Man fan, I think this is just perfect casting.

Downey is Oscar-nominated, is a brilliantly gifted actor whose main problems have been his own addiction.

Sounds like Tony Stark to me.

I wonder how modern the origin story going to be, considering the current affair would provide such a means for a weapons inventor to create a suit, though it would go against the method.*

My guess would be they will update the origin in the same way as the recent Iron Man reboot written by Warren Ellis, where Stark's heart is injured in the first Iraq War and he makes the Iron Man suit to escape and keep himself alive.

Basically the original origin with Iraq taking the place of Vietnam.

I mean, I don't think you can have heroes with Vietnam origins anymore. They'd be 60. The same thing was done to Punisher's origin.

I would agree with you on that. Unless they drasticly change her appearance the average movie goer will think he's dating Jean Grey

She'd be a perfect choice for Black Widow.

As to the audience thinking she's Jean Grey. Cmon guys... so everyone going to see War of the Worlds thought it was a Mission Impossible movie cause it had Tom Cruise in it?

And Forrest Gump starring in Da Vinci code?

Movie audiences are pretty savvy with the fact that actors play different parts, even the ones that go see comics movies.

Why? Did the War of the World took place in the Mission Impossible setting? :p

It would be a trip to insert Gump into that film like they did in the Forrest Gump film.

Savvy, perhaps. But they're going to point out why Jean Grey is in this another MU-based film.

Please note that I can forgive James Marsden in Superman Return (a DCU-based franchise film) even though I do recognized and acknowledged him for being Cyclops in the X-Men films (MU-based franchise films), although they did not treat his mutant character kindly in the two sequels.

Neither of those movies are in the same universe. Iron Man and X-Men take place in the state in the same universe.
