Andy Collins speaks - Spell Compendium

Now, although the idea of a bunch of reprints from the PH pisses me off, a dozen spells with heavy errata been reprinted in there wouldn't be bad at all, no sir, not bad at all.

I actually would be very surprised if Polymorph gets errata. I don't think they've had enough time to look at it (as it works in 3.5e) and really come up with a satisfactory solution that has been playtested enough. It'll likely remain a glaring hole until 4e. Or further. (I wonder if the final solution will involve ECL as the best way of judging the power of a creature?)

Andy does note that the PHB spells aren't reprinted, though I guess that leaves room for one or two exceptions - and with the recent release of the Special Ediiton errata, I'd guess there'd be very few that would qualify for an update here.

Cheers!

I'm just saying the numbers of people don't always tell the story of how good it will be.

Heh. :)

I do think that because it does have a development team, they have looked at rebalancing spells. Although, their idea of balance isn't always ours...

Cheers!

MerricB, do you know if Spell Compendium. will include any spells from non-WotC sources?

Only what Andy says in the quoted text. I think that:

"It's a massive collection of D&D spells collected from a wide range of official source material published throughout the lifespan of 3rd edition and carefully developed to maximize utility and gameplay." and "I'll also confirm that Dragon magazine (from debut of 3E to present) was one of the sources for Spell Compendium" pretty much answer your question.

I suppose some Dragonlance or Kalamar material might be used, but I'd be very surprised to see anything from Necromancer Games or similar.

Cheers!

Obligatory one sentence statement:
If they've corrected the errata and done rebalancing of the spells that turn up in dragon this will be a useful book.

They should really be doing a revamp of the "core" books to include the good material from the completes, etc.

This may be a deciding factor for me. I tend to buy most of the WotC source books, so while collecting them into one volume would be convienient, it won't be a priority unless it includes a bunch of spells I don't already have.

What I'm really looking forward to on this book is the web enhancement: I have to imagine that there will be spell worksheets online.

They don't need to be self-computing or searchable or interactive in any way. I just want an update to the spell planning worksheets included with the character record sheets.

I bet that all spells include errata, but I really don't think that they will have "corrected" versions. That would complicate things again like it was a minor revision IMHO.

edit: and they will surely be all 3.5 versions

I dont think I'm going to get his if all it is, is a reprint of FR and the Complete Spells. I was hoping for official updates of a lot of the old 2e spells but I guess it's up to the fans for that.

I'm glad they are not reprinting the PH spells.

I guess it's only a matter of time, though before we see a magic item compendium...

I've stopped buying the Complete books, and have not bought any Races books, plus I have a hard time finding spells in issues of Dragon, so this book could be good for me.

And thanks, as always, to Merric for reading the WotC Boards so that we don't have to.
