Angel 5-5

This episode was everything that is good about the Buffyverse. Sure, it can be dank, dark and moody but it is also funny, silly and irreverantly immature. All the Buffy references, the cameos and the Angel/Spike interactions were classic. I think too many of you went in with expectations that weren't fulfilled and ignored what was cool about the episode. Which was just about everything. ;)

...

Yes, it may not have been the best episode to have with only 3 remaining but the fact is that it was funny and entertaining episode. And isn't that the point? We got the dark and disturbing plotline along with the cool, silly one. Both worked well. Viva Angel.

I agree. This episode was vintage Angel. I would have preferred to have an episode which did everything this one did and substantially advanced the current plotline, but even without the latter it was a funny, enjoyable episode. I was chuckling to myself throughout.

And now I so need to have a BBEG like the Immortal IMC. Even worse, I should make him a really nice and popular hero (paladin would do) who everybody gushes over and who invariably manages to pull off things the PCs cannot, all without actually making an appearance or taking the spotlight off the PCs.

Eh. I didn't hate it as much as I loathed the Harmony-centric episode earlier in the season, but I sure didn't enjoy most of it.

And by "most of it" I mean "Angel and Spike's stupid Italy jaunt." Amy Acker's performance was pure distilled brilliance, set in a great storyline, and if they'd focused the entire episode on the Fang Gang that Spike and Angel left behind (leaving the vamps offscreen for the whole episode), I would've been a happy camper.

To be fair, it's not like Joss and crew had any advance warning. Sure, the show was almost cancelled last season, but the fact that they picked it up despite that could easily be interpreted as the WB having some degree of faith in it. The way I understand it was a situation eerily similar to Farscape, in that they had already wrapped shooting for the most part when they were told - too late to do anything about it. Worst case, it was a instance of supreme ego on the part of ME that they would be picked up again.

That's no reason to let it sour the series though.

The problem is this. When word of the cancellation first came out, I distinctly remember Joss (or one of the other ME big guys, but I'm pretty sure it was Joss himself) coming out and saying, basically, that he'd already written the season finale in a way where it could serve as the series finale, and that he only writes cliffhangers when he's certain they'll be resolved, since to do otherwise is unfair to the viewers. If that turns out not to be the case here, well, I've got great faith in Joss, and no one thing is going to destroy it, but it'll certainly start to erode.

WTF

stupid VCR!!! somehow I got Jamie Kennedy's dumb factor ...

grr, I can't believe my VCR doesn't have enough processing power to realize that even though I set the programs in reverse order it has to look at the time first (set for 1. Angel 9-10, then 2 for enterprise 8-9) .... I know I had the date correct

sooo is there a possibility of seeing this reaired? (god, why couldn't I have screwed up enterprise ... it's easy to find the re-air)?

is this episode as necessary as the others? (time to read spoilers I guess) ... Will it kill the plot line for me if I miss this episode?

sigh,

ya know, I just want to kill something ... and I can't even do that, my computer is waaay to slow, and I haven't rp'd in nearly a year!

Spike has been know to lie, how do we know Spike has been wearing that jacket for 30 years...did he go back to Sunnydale to get it? :) I don't even think he was wearing it when he moved into the light.

Ha, now that's a good point. And there wasn't anything left of Sunnydale. But I thought he was wearing it when he first arrived in this season of Angel.

It was I think reliably visually established in Buffy that he still had the same jacket, in the episode that included the flashback of Spike killing said slayer. Or is that episodes? One in which he told Buffy about how he killed the two Slayers he did, and the one with her son trying to take him down. :)

Anyhow I am pretty sure I remember that 70s Slayer ;) wearing the jacket, then cut forward to Spike wearing it.

Yeah, it was pretty well established that it was The Jacket, with the Slayers Son.

Well, if he's neutral that's a good reason for him not to have a dramatic impact upon the world. Then again, maybe he does and we just don't know it. Sounds like if anything he's a force for balance.
He's mentioned as straddling the line, but seems mostly to be a force for himself. I just don't think it fits, because he's never been mentioned before, they just toss him in with added background that makes him seem important. Add that Buffy is dating him. That seems weak and contrived.

I'd have also prefered simply focusing on LA more while they were away. Not ignoring Angel & Spike in Italy, but minimizing it. I found Italian WR&H to be somewhat lacking.

I think this was one of the worst episodes this year. I didn't find it that funny, it just wasn't that entertaining at all. Andrew has changed for the worse, I'm npt even sure why they had him there. I guess to show that characters can evolve and that Spike and Angel should, but it really wasn't needed.

When Spike showed up he was just a ghost. So maybe he showed up as he imagined himself and thus had the jacket again even though the original was burried under the highschool.

Dunno. Just a wild guess.
