Angel/Buffy questions

My wife has recently started watching Angel in the afternoon, aka syndication, besides not being able to fallow the plots as closely as she would like she’s enjoyed it. I know the first three seasons are on DVD, and their aware like 5 episodes left in the series. Anyhow I have the fallow questions:

1) How much of Buffy does my wife need to see to really enjoy angel?

2) How many seasons has angel been on? (It is done correct?)

3) How many seasons was Buffy on before that?

4) Would you get Buffy to go along with angel? If so how would you watch them? Are there a certain number of seasons of Buffy to watch before you cut over to watching Angel?

1) The more the better, but with the exception of a few episodes here and there, none of it is truly necessary. There's some crossover, but in most cases, all the necessary details are explained. You'll miss a lot of the subtext and the coolness factor, but it won't ruin the Angel eps.

2) We're approaching the end of season 5, and barring a miracle, yes, this is the end. :(

3) Three. Season one of Angel parallels season four of Buffy (and also has the most crossovers).

4) Yes, I would, but then, I'm a huge fan of both series. And I'd watch them in order; that is, I wouldn't even start Angel without watching seasons 1-3 of Buffy.

Can you tell if they are showing the series in order? I know when I'd occassionally see Buffy in the afternoon they were showing the shows totally out of order. As in, I'd see a season two episode and the next day it would be an episode from a different season. Have no idea if Angel is being done like that but if it is, I'd certainly get the DVDs.

There's not a tremendous amount of overlap, but I would watch at least season 1 and 2 of Buffy before doing a lot with Angel. It'll help explain some things, but you could watch Angel alone.

If you are really into Angel, the first three seasons of Buffy would be best for a good introduction into who Angel is, and how Buffy fits into the picture. Also with Cordelia and Wesley too.

2) How many seasons has angel been on? (It is done correct?)

Angel is ending it's 5th season soon. And sadly it is the last.

3) How many seasons was Buffy on before that?

Angel started after season 3 of Buffy. To understand why Angel left Buffy, you really do need to see season 3 of Buffy, and to understand season 3, you need to season 2. After Angel left Buffy continued for 4 more seasons, running a good 7 seasons.

4) Would you get Buffy to go along with angel? If so how would you watch them? Are there a certain number of seasons of Buffy to watch before you cut over to watching Angel?

The first 3 seasons of Buffy really give a lot of back story not only to Angel, but to everything that is going on with vampires, and demons, and stuff. I am collecting all of the Buffy and Angel seasons because I enjoy the stories that are given, and the plots. But if you find you aren't liking Buffy, especially after Angel leaves, maybe better just to stick with one series.

I won't comment on the movie. Haven't seen it, but I do want to to see how relevent it is to the story. My guess the movie is something that I can go without, given it isn't looked nicely upon by Joss Whedon (the dude that created it all, except maybe movie) or any other good fan of the Buffy and Angel series.

Just FYI, Joss did create the movie as well and he doesn't like it. IIRC, he doesn't even consider it part of Buffy canon. I can't say that I blame him...

I caught the last half of the Buffy season (3?) before Angel left. I liked Buffy and watched it through to the end, but I'm only just now going back and catching up on the previous episodes. I watched Angel from the beginning and, especially first season, loved it -- even more than Buffy. In fact, I'm pretty sure I could honestly say that Angel has been my favorite TV show through its entire run.

I don't think my enjoyment of Angel was hurt by not catching all the background stuff from Buffy. I do have a lot of Buffy-phile friends, though, and was able to get "the short version" of lots of history from them.

Also, Angel has a seriously different feel than Buffy, in terms of power. Even the humans (Wes and Gunn, especially) on Angel kick a fair amount of demon butt. That just doesn't happen in Buffy.

I remember watching Season 4 Buffy and Season 1 Angel, and thinking "Gosh, why's Angel so much more fun than Buffy?" My roommate noticed that, too.

Thanks for all who have replied to this, I'm sorry for being so quite in a thread I've started but to be honest you've all done such a good job that I didn't need to. :)

Anyhow after looking at Amazon I picked up their Buffy set season 1-4 for (119 US dollars) and angel season 1. :)

Buffy is a fantastic series. In my opinion, the Buffy series is even better than the Angel series.

If you're watching it on TNT, yeah, it's in order, at least this first time through. They started with season 1 a while back and are now up to, um, today they showed the first episode of season 4, with
Angel in the watery grave
and all that. They should finish 4 in a couple of weeks and loop, because season 5 is the current season and isn't syndicated yet as far as I know.
